Roundtable SMEs and Sustainability: Challenges and Opportunities in North America
Mexico City
Mexico
December 3, 2024
Semi-Private
Held in Mexico City on 3 December 2024 as an event co-organized by the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) and Mexico's National Chamber of the Manufacturing Industry (Cámara Nacional de la Industria de Transformación—CANACINTRA), this in-person, half-day roundtable brought together representatives of small and medium-size enterprises (SMEs) from Canada, Mexico and the United States to discuss the challenges and opportunities of integrating sustainable practices into their operations. Event participants contributed to exploring how SMEs can become key drivers of a greener and more sustainable future.

Agenda
SMEs are a fundamental pillar of the North American economy: in the three countries, they account for a majority of businesses and generate millions of jobs. While they are often seen as smaller players than large corporations, their number, economic impact and collective environmental footprint render them essential in addressing such global challenges as climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. However, SMEs also face significant obstacles, such as financial limitations, lack of specialized knowledge, and the inherent complexity of international compliance. In this context, the CEC has organized, in collaboration with CANACINTRA, the roundtable “SMEs and Sustainability: Challenges and Opportunities in North America,” to bring together SME representatives from Mexico, Canada and the United States to discuss challenges and opportunities of integrating sustainable practices into their operations. This event seeks to explore how SMEs can become key drivers of a greener and more sustainable future.

Welcome and introduction: SMEs' role in North America in light of the triple planetary crisis
Jorge Daniel Taillant, Executive Director of the CEC
In his opening remarks, the Executive Director of the CEC will analyze the SMEs’ impacts on the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. He will stress the importance of strengthening trilateral cooperation in North America, in the framework of agreements such as the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), to facilitate the transition of small and medium-size enterprises toward more sustainable business models. He will also call on participants to reflect on how the CEC can support SMEs.
3:30 pm-3:40 pm
Challenges and opportunities for SMEs
Carlos Villanueva, National Vice President for Sustainable Development Objectives, CANACINTRA
Carlos Villanueva will lead the discussion on the main obstacles that SMEs face in implementing environmental practices, such as financial limitations, lack of access to clean technologies and environmental compliance issues. He will also discuss the opportunities that arise from incorporating sustainability, such as improved competitiveness, access to new markets, the benefits of energy efficiency and lower waste generation.

Private-sector engagement strategy in environmental protection in North America
Marcela Orozco, Head of Unit, Advisory Groups and Private-Sector Engagement, CEC
