North American Energy Management Pilot Program
The 2016–2017 North American Energy Management Pilot Program was completed in June 2017. A total of 18 industrial facilities from 9 companies across North America received an 18-month training program on the ISO 50001 energy management standard and the Superior Energy Performance® program.
Training summary
The CEC developed the training program with experts from the Georgia Institute of Technology’s Enterprise Innovation Institute and recruited facilities from companies across North America. Each facility created a team of assigned staff to attend the training throughout the 18-month program.
The training program was delivered between March 2016 and June 2017 in phases aligned with the “Plan-Do-Check-Act” continual improvement framework of the ISO 50001 standard. The program included the following training components:
- Preparation
- Online preparatory course to introduce the ISO 50001 standard and SEP
- Introduction to the training program, including expectations and logistics (via webinar)
- Gap assessment
- Demonstrating business value to upper management
- Implementation Phase 1: “Plan”
- 3 days of in-person group training
- Monthly coaching webinars and calls
- Quarterly reports and follow-up
- Implementation Phase II: “Do”
- 3 days of in-person group training
- Monthly coaching webinars and calls
- Quarterly reports and follow-up
- Implementation Phase III: “Check” and “Act”
- 3 days of in-person group training
- Monthly coaching webinars and calls
- Quarterly reports and follow-up
- Implementation Phase IV: Assessment and Evaluation
- Flexible remote coaching on as-needed basis (up to three days)
- Review of documentation for certification

Recognition at high-level North American fora
On 9 May 2017, program participants attended a panel discussion with other industry leaders, energy management experts, and high-level representatives from the energy agencies in Canada, Mexico and the United States to discuss efforts and opportunities to drive energy savings in the North American industrial and commercial sectors by accelerating corporate adoption of ISO 50001 and SEP. This panel discussion took place at the international EE Global Forum in Washington, DC.
