Montreal, 7 October 2016—The 2016 Leaders’ Statement on a North American Climate, Clean Energy, and Environment Partnership announced a historic goal for North America to strive to achieve 50 percent clean power generation by 2025. On November 7, the Commission for Environmental Cooperation’s (CEC) Joint Public Advisory Committee (JPAC) will host a public meeting to discuss how North America can rise to this challenge and advance innovation in clean energy and energy efficiency.

Building on the June 29 Leaders’ Statement on a North American Climate, Clean Energy, and Environment Partnership, as well as the February 12 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)between Canada, Mexico and the United States concerning climate change and energy collaboration between the three NAFTA countries, this JPAC session will examine the links between innovation in clean energy and energy efficiency, in the context of addressing climate change and advancing clean and secure power.
Sustainable energy solutions must embrace the challenge of efficient transmission, delivery, and consumption as well as clean energy choice and production. Efficiency and conservation are critical aspects of a clean and sustainable energy future. Without conservation efforts, including fuel-efficient products and high-efficiency lighting, clean energy alternatives remain constrained by the need to store energy for periods of high demand.
This JPAC session will bring together experts from industry, academia and government as well as members of the wider public to identify new opportunities for creating a coordinated clean and efficient energy future in North America.
Participation at the public forum is free of charge. Simultaneous interpretation will be provided in English, French and Spanish. Join in-person or follow the discussion online at www.cec.org/webcast. Submit your questions and comments via Facebook at www.facebook.com/CECconnect and on Twitter @CECweb.
About the CEC
The Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) was established in 1994 by the governments of Canada, Mexico and the United States through the North American Agreement on Environmental Cooperation, a parallel environmental agreement to NAFTA. As of 2020, the CEC is recognized and maintained by the Environmental Cooperation Agreement, in parallel with the new Free Trade Agreement of North America. The CEC brings together a wide range of stakeholders, including the general public, Indigenous people, youth, nongovernmental organizations, academia, and the business sector, to seek solutions to protect North America’s shared environment while supporting sustainable development for the benefit of present and future generations
The CEC is governed and funded equally by the Government of Canada through Environment and Climate Change Canada, the Government of the United States of Mexico through the Secretaría de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales, and the Government of the United States of America through the Environmental Protection Agency.
