CEC’s Joint Public Advisory Committee submits advice to Council
Joint Public Advisory Committee of the Commission for Environmental Cooperation submits advice and comments to Council
Montreal, 27 May 2015—The Joint Public Advisory Committee (JPAC) of the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) has submitted advice to the CEC Council on the CEC’s 2015–2016 Operational Plan and on the Submissions on Enforcement Matters process. The Committee also provided comments on the CEC’s draft Strategic Plan 2015–2020 and issues discussed at its meeting in Monterrey, Mexico, in April.
“These recommendations and comments are an important part of our responsibilities and commitment to advise the CEC Council in its deliberations,” said Gustavo Alanís-Ortega, JPAC chair. “Our advice on the CEC’s 2015–2016 Operational Plan incorporates public comments and suggestions received by JPAC from individuals and representatives from different sectors of society, including the private sector, nongovernmental organizations, and academia related to the upcoming projects and will enhance trinational cooperation on the North American environmental agenda.”

Composed of 15 citizens (five from each country), JPAC advises the Council on any matter within the scope of the North American Agreement on Environmental Cooperation (NAAEC) and serves as a source of information for the CEC Secretariat.

About the CEC
The Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) was established in 1994 by the governments of Canada, Mexico and the United States through the North American Agreement on Environmental Cooperation, a parallel environmental agreement to NAFTA. As of 2020, the CEC is recognized and maintained by the Environmental Cooperation Agreement, in parallel with the new Free Trade Agreement of North America. The CEC brings together a wide range of stakeholders, including the general public, Indigenous people, youth, nongovernmental organizations, academia, and the business sector, to seek solutions to protect North America’s shared environment while supporting sustainable development for the benefit of present and future generations
The CEC is governed and funded equally by the Government of Canada through Environment and Climate Change Canada, the Government of the United States of Mexico through the Secretaría de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales, and the Government of the United States of America through the Environmental Protection Agency.
