Protected Areas
It’s #MapMonday! Did you know that Protected Areas are a key focus of the Convention on Biological Diversity UN Biodiversity and a priority agenda item for the upcoming #COP15 Conference of the Parties?
Healthy ecosystems and biodiversity are crucial to protect as they provide many ecosystem services such as pollination for food production, prevention of erosion in coastal areas, water/air filtration, as well as carbon sequestration and storage, in addition to their intrinsic and cultural values. Protecting biodiversity is a critical part of fighting #ClimateChange and achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
The North American Environmental Atlas from the Commission for Environmental Cooperation provides geospatial data and a map of the North American Protected Areas, as categorized by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
