The map you’re looking at is the most comprehensive view we have of North American blue carbon – a powerful ally in our fight against climate change.
Though these coastal ecosystems cover less than 2% of the area of the world’s oceans they also sequester at least 50% of the carbon stored in ocean sediments and have the potential to store all that carbon for thousands of years.
Across North America there are hundreds of projects underway to protect these ecosystems from the many different threats they face today.
