Reaching Horizon 2030 – An Environmental Outlook for North American Cooperation

The Joint Public Advisory Committee (JPAC) of the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) is seeking comments and suggestions from people across North America on the implementation of the CEC’s “Reaching Horizon 2030: An Environmental Outlook for North American Cooperation” initiative.

The goal of the Reaching Horizon 2030 (H-2030) initiative is to provide critical information and input to chart the future of the CEC’s work and help identify priority actions to accelerate progress to 2030 and address the triple planetary crisis. The H-2030 initiative will focus on three priority topics: 1) Earth Observation Technologies and Other Geographic Information System (GIS) Tools, 2) Sustainable Transportation, and 3) Ecosystem Services / Sustainable Use and Management of Biodiversity. These topics were selected by the Governments of Canada, Mexico and the United States through the CEC Council, as they represent areas where regional collaboration could be highly beneficial.

This consultation invites people to share insights and recommendations on how the CEC can effectively address key environmental issues through its strategies, programs, and partnerships. Your participation is critical in shaping actions that will help North America achieve its climate, biodiversity, and pollution reduction goals.

Alongside this public consultation, JPAC is hosting a Public Forum on this initiative on 4 and 5 December 2024 to serve as a platform for discussing how CEC efforts can be strategically aligned with international goals and identifying concrete actions and collaborative opportunities to help the North American region address the triple planetary crisis. Combining expert presentations with in-depth discussions among policymakers, experts, communities and key actors, the JPAC Public Forum aims to develop strategic recommendations for advancing actions by 2030 and crafting strategies to achieve regional and global environmental objectives.

2024 CEC Youth Engagement Week

Are you between the ages of 18 and 35 and passionate about Earth Observation Technologies or other Geographic Information Systems (GIS) tools, sustainable transportation, and the sustainable use and management of biodiversity?

Then you should participate in the 2024 CEC Youth Engagement Week workshop! This event will provide a unique opportunity for youth to engage directly in the Joint Public Advisory Committee (JPAC) public consultation on Reaching Horizon 2030. Led by three youth facilitators, the workshop will introduce you to JPAC, its public consultation process, and the CEC’s Horizon 2030 initiative. You will also have the chance to share your perspectives with local and national peers on the priority topics of the CEC’s Horizon 2030 initiative. The insights gathered during the workshop will be presented by the facilitators to JPAC members at the upcoming JPAC Public Forum taking place in Mexico City on 4 and 5 December, ensuring that youth perspectives are taken into account as JPAC formulates its advice to the CEC Council.

The 2024 CEC Youth Engagement Week (YEW) is an annual event designed to embrace youth perspectives in North America by fostering active youth participation in the CEC’s work and efforts. The YEW responds to the CEC’s Youth Engagement Strategy and aims to create an enabling environment for young people from Canada, Mexico and the United States to engage in meaningful dialogues, contribute to environmental discussions at the regional level, and collaborate on innovative solutions to address pressing environmental challenges. Through workshops, consultations and collaborative projects, the 2024 CEC Youth Engagement Week supports the development of an intergenerational network committed to sustainability and environmental stewardship.
