  • For virtual internships: have access to the Internet and the required hardware (e.g., laptop).

Tasks

The selected candidate will be expected to perform a variety of short-term and quick-turn-around assignments, research tasks, and other activities, for example:

  1. Support the internal engagement process and drafting for developing Indigenous policy for the CEC (e.g., Indigenous strategy, protocol for working with Indigenous peoples).
  2. Support the management and secretariat functions for the CEC’s TEK Expert Group.
  3. Support the implementation of TEK Expert Group projects and initiatives.
  4. Monitor and track developments in traditional ecological knowledge (TEK), Indigenous affairs, and related environmental policy in North America by conducting regular environmental scans and news research.
  5. Assist with advising other CEC units on their approaches to working with Indigenous peoples and TEK.

About the CEC

The Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) was established in 1994 by the governments of Canada, Mexico and the United States through the North American Agreement on Environmental Cooperation, a parallel environmental agreement to NAFTA. As of 2020, the CEC is recognized and maintained by the Environmental Cooperation Agreement, in parallel with the new Free Trade Agreement of North America. The CEC brings together a wide range of stakeholders, including the general public, Indigenous people, youth, nongovernmental organizations, academia, and the business sector, to seek solutions to protect North America’s shared environment while supporting sustainable development for the benefit of present and future generations.

The CEC is governed and funded equally by the Government of Canada through Environment and Climate Change Canada, the Government of the United States of Mexico through the Secretaría de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales, and the Government of the United States of America through the Environmental Protection Agency.

We appreciate your interest in the CEC and wish to inform you that only short-listed candidates will be contacted. All résumés will be kept on file for a six-month period and taken into consideration for any suitable vacancies occurring during that time.
