This public forum organized by the CEC's Joint Public's advisory Committee will bring together energy experts from across Canada, Mexico and the United States to answer questions about the current state of renewable energy as well as future potential.
A series of speakers will address a range of energy questions, including: What is the future of renewable energy in North America? What progress has been made since the CEC’s Fostering Renewable Electricity Markets in North America report in 2007? What are some of the challenges and barriers affecting the use of renewable energy? How can renewable energy projects be promoted in remote communities?

Director General
Pronatura México A.C.
An attorney specializing in environmental law who graduated from Universidad Iberoamericana, Martín Gutiérrez has been known in recent years as the creator of private land conservation schemes in Mexico, including the development of the first ecological easement agreements.
Currently general director of Pronatura México, A.C., and consultant to the World Bank in land conservation and transversal integration, he was for 10 years director of Pronatura's National Land Conservation Program.

Evan Lloyd - CEC Executive Director
Evan Lloyd was appointed Executive Director of the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC), effective 20 April 2010.
Mr. Lloyd previously worked as the CEC Secretariat's Director of Programs and Director of Communications and was, from 1991 to 2001, a senior public sector manager in the government of British Columbia, serving multiple administrations as both an associate and assistant deputy minister.
He received a master of science degree from the London School of Economics and a bachelor's degree from the University of British Columbia.

Glen Wright - JPAC member

Glen Wright has had a successful career in both the public and private sectors, spanning the domains of strategic planning, project management, corporate restructuring, health care, health, safety, and disability, and disease management.
Mr. Wright was the founder of Wright Mogg and Associates Ltd. in 1980, building the company into one of the top ten actuarial employee benefit consulting companies in Canada over a 20-year period. He was also the founding chairman of World Access Canada in partnership with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of the National Capital Area, Washington, DC. He also has experience with Crown Corporations, including the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Hydro One Inc. and the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (Ontario).
Mr. Wright has won numerous awards, including Honorary Alumnus, Wilfrid Laurier University; Alumnus of Distinction Award, Durham College; and was a recipient of the Canada 125th Anniversary Medal for outstanding community service.
Mr. Wright is currently chairman of PrinterOn Corporation and chairman and chief executive officer of Gpark Consulting, Inc.

Jatin Nathwani
Ontario Research Chair in Public Policy for Sustainable Energy
Executive Director, Waterloo Institute for Sustainable Energy (WISE), University of Waterloo (Ontario)
Professor Nathwani serves on several boards of directors at the provincial and national levels. He is lead scientific advisor to the Equinox Energy 2030 Summit of the Waterloo Global Science Initiative (WGSI) and lead author of the ‘Equinox Blueprint Energy 2030’. He is chair of the board of Canadian University Network of Excellence in Nuclear Engineering (UNENE), member of the Ontario Smart Grid Forum, board member, Ontario Centre of Excellence (OCE), member, Clean Tech Advisory Board (Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade), member, Council for Clean and Reliable Electricity (CCRE), member, Advisory Panel for the Science Media Centre of Canada (SMCC), and advisory board member, Sustainable Waterloo.
Professor Nathwani’s experience in the energy sector includes corporate strategy, business planning, policy developments influencing the electricity sector and the planning, design and operation of critical infrastructure. His knowledge of industry practices encompasses regulatory affairs, drivers of innovation in business practice and environmental health and safety issues.
His current focus is on competitive energy policies to enable the innovations required for the transition of the global energy system to a lower carbon energy economy. WISE promotes policies to enhance the environmental and economic performance over the long term. As a member of the Ontario Smart Grid Forum, he continues to help shape the vision and policies for enabling the smart grid.
Professor Nathwani has appeared frequently in the media and has authored over 80 publications related to energy and risk management, including six books.
Jan Carr
Dr. Carr has 40 years’ experience in the electricity sector as a professional engineer, holding senior positions in the design and planning of electricity transmission and distribution systems and advising utilities, governments and other stakeholders on the financial, business, strategic and policy aspects of the electric power industry. He has worked on projects in many parts of the world, including Asia, Africa and the Caribbean, and holds a PhD in electric power systems from the University of Waterloo. Dr. Carr was the founding chief executive officer of the Ontario Power Authority, a position from which he retired in 2008. Prior to that, he was vice-chair of the Ontario Energy Board.
He is a member of the boards of the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO), Legend Power Systems and Guelph Hydro. He is also an independent member of Gowlings International Strategic Advisory Group, providing business advice to both the firm’s international law practice and its clients.
Previously, he served on the boards of directors of TransAlta Power and of Macquarie Canadian Infrastructure Management Ltd. He was a member of the Advisory Committee on Competition in Ontario’s Electricity System. He was a publicly elected commissioner and chairman of the municipally-owned electric utility serving the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake.
In 2007 he was awarded a medal for management by the Ontario Professional Engineers and in 2010 an honorary degree from the University of Waterloo.
Dave Pelunis-Messier
Dave Pelunis-Messier has been the energy department manager for the Yukon River Inter-Tribal Watershed Council since 2009. During that time, his work has involved the installation of small wind, solar PV, solar hot water, energy efficiency measures and hydrokinetics. He has also organized and led a number of renewable energy and energy efficiency trainings for Alaskans.
Since 2009, he has succeeded in facilitating complex and valuable cross-sector partnerships. His work has brought together native corporations, the private energy sector, governmental agencies, and traditional tribal councils as cosponsors of various energy proposals for Alaskan villages along the Yukon River and its tributaries.
Mr. Pelunis-Messier graduated in 2008 from Cornell University with a degree in natural resources management and business; he is currently completing requirements for an MBA at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and recently started Daylight Energy Services, a renewable energy and energy efficiency consulting company based in Fairbanks, Alaska.
Peter Miller
Peter Miller is a senior scientist at the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) with over 25 years experience in energy and climate policy. His work is focused on California energy policy, implementation of the state's Global Warming Solutions Act (AB32), and greenhouse gas emissions accounting and offsets.
He is currently a board member of the Climate Action Reserve and has served on the California Board for Energy Efficiency and on both Independent Review Panels evaluating the Public Interest Energy Research program at the California Energy Commission.
Mr. Miller has degrees from Dartmouth College and Reed College.
Leonardo Beltran
Leonardo Beltran is an independent consultant with a master's degree in public administration and international development from Harvard University and a bachelor’s degree in economics from the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM), in addition to law studies at Universidad Nacional Autónomo de México (UNAM).
Formerly general director of Information and Energy Studies and director of International Negotiations at Mexico’s Ministry of Energy, he has consulted for the World Bank, the OECD and BBVA Bancomer.
