Members of non-governmental organizations, industry, academics and other interested members of the public are also participating at the meeting, during a special public session led by the ministers.
Canada’s Environmental Minister, Sergio Marchi will play host to his two NAFTA counterparts, US Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Carol Browner and Mexico’s Minister of the Environment, Natural Resources and Fisheries, Julia Carabias. This meeting, which is expected to draw more than 200 public participants, is the third gathering of the NAFTA environment commission -- known officially as the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) -- since NAFTA was signed in 1994.
The CEC, which is funded equally by Canada, Mexico and the U.S., oversees a wide range of cooperative environmental programs. The Secretariat of the CEC, staffed equally by Canadians, Mexicans and Americans, is located in Montreal.
